East African Court of Justice, Arusha, Tanzania, 16th March 2026: The Hon. Judge President of the East African Court of Justice (EACJ), Hon. Justice Nestor Kayobera, accompanied by the Vice President of the Court, Hon. Lady Justice Anita Mugeni, paid a courtesy visit to the Deputy Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the Republic of Azerbaijan, Hon. Justice Chingiz Asgarov, at the Supreme Court headquarters in Baku. 

The visit took place shortly after the EACJ leadership’s participation in the XIII Global Baku Forum, an international high-level platform that convenes current and former heads of state and government, senior policymakers, jurists, and global thought leaders to discuss pressing global challenges. The 2026 Forum focused on strengthening multilateral dialogue, addressing global governance challenges, and promoting cooperation in areas such as peace, security, sustainable development, and the rule of law. 

During the courtesy meeting, the delegations engaged in constructive discussions on matters of common interest, including the administration of justice, judicial independence, case management practices, and the evolving role of regional and international courts in upholding the rule of law. 

The meeting also provided an opportunity to exchange perspectives on emerging legal challenges and the importance of judicial cooperation and knowledge sharing across jurisdictions. 

On this occasion, Hon. Justice Nestor Kayobera extended a formal invitation to Hon. Justice Chingiz Asgarov to attend the 25th Anniversary Celebrations of the East African Court of Justice, scheduled to take place in November 2026. The milestone event will commemorate twenty-five years of the Court’s contribution to the development of regional jurisprudence, the promotion of the rule of law, and the advancement of the East African Community integration agenda. 

The Hon. Judge President expressed appreciation for the warm reception and hospitality extended to the delegation and reaffirmed the Court’s commitment to strengthening international judicial cooperation. In response, Hon. Justice Chingiz Asgarov welcomed the engagement and emphasized the value of continued dialogue and collaboration among judicial institutions to enhance the effective administration of justice. 

The visit concluded with a reaffirmation of the shared commitment to promoting judicial excellence, transparency, and the rule of law through sustained cooperation and exchange of best practices. 

About the EACJ 

The East African Court of Justice (EACJ or ‘the Court’), is one of the Organs of the East African Community established under Article 9 of the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community. The Court was established in November 2001; its key mandate is to ensure the adherence to law in the interpretation and application of and compliance with the EAC Treaty. Arusha is the temporary seat of the Court until the Summit determines its permanent seat.
