Case Number REFERENCE NO. 12 OF 2023
Summary

The Applicant alleges that Zanzibar’s general elections of 2020 including the presidential election, contravened Article 26 of the Constitution of Zanzibar 1984 Edition 2020 that requires contestants to be nominees of a Political Party registered in accordance with the Political Parties Act. The Applicant further alleges that there was no Act of parliament governing registration of political parties at that material time and therefore seeks nullification of the election and that the Zanzibar General Election 2020 amounted to a violation of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms of the People of Zanzibar.
