Court requires enhanced capacity building as it is one of the main issues in its Strategic Plan, says Judge President
Arusha, 21 August 2012: Kenya Country Representatives of the Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS) in Sub- Saharan Africa, today paid a courtesy visit to the East African Court of Justice to discuss its achievements, challenges, and necessary support to the Court.
EACJ Judge President Hon. Mr. Justice Harold Nsekela, while briefing the representatives expressed his gratitude to the KAS team for their endless support and relationship which has contributed to the operations of the Court and emphasized that the EACJ requires enhanced capacity as one of the main issues in its Strategic Plan (2010-2015).
Justice Nsekela requested more support, specifically on the matters of common and civil law systems and human rights as the Court’s jurisdiction is in the process of being extended.
The Judge President added that the Court would also greatly benefit from support in electronic library development, publication and dissemination of the judgments, law reports and law journals, which will enhance its ability to keep records.
The Director Rule of Law Program for Sub-Saharan Africa at Konrad Adenauer Stiftung, Prof. Dr. Christian Roschman echoed the need for enhancing KAS-EACJ cooperation and encouraged the EACJ to team up with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Court in order to learn and share experiences and challenges as regional courts.
Prof. Roschman was accompanied by Prof. Dr. Rainer Grote, Senior Research in Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law while the Deputy Registrar Ms Geraldine Umugwaneza accompanied the Judge President and the Principal Judge to the function.

The East African Court of Justice (EACJ or the Court), is the judicial arm of the East African Community established under Article 9 of the Treaty for the Establishment of the East African Community.
Operationalized in November 2001, the Court’s major responsibility is to ensure the adherence to law in the interpretation and application of and compliance with the EAC Treaty.
Arusha is the temporary seat of the Court until the Summit determines its permanent seat. The High Courts of the Partner States serve as sub-registries.
